The Greatest Commandment: Part Five – Love Your Neighbor (Love Mercy)

08/29/2021 – The Greatest Commandment: Part Five – Love Your Neighbor (Love Mercy)

Luke 10:25-37. For Part Five of our series on The Greatest Commandment, special guest Reverend Chalice Overy brought a powerful word about mercy from Jesus’ well-known parable of the Good Samaritan.

The Greatest Commandment: Part Four – Strength

08/22/2021 – The Greatest Commandment: Part Four – Strength.

Mark 12:28-34. In the Great Commandment, the final pathway by which we are told to love God is with our strength. This word needs to be untangled from some modern (and narrow) uses of the word, and reintroduced to us within its original Hebrew context.

The Greatest Commandment: Part Three – Mind

08/15/2021 – The Greatest Commandment: Part Three – Mind.

Mark 12:28-34. In week 3 of our series on the greatest commandment, we learn about what it means to love God with our mind. (Hint, it has something to do with an elephant.)

The Greatest Commandment: Part Two – Soul

08/08/2021 – The Greatest Commandment: Part Two – Soul.

Mark 12:28-34. The Hebrew word for soul is Nephesh. As is often the case, words in Hebrew almost always hold a much bigger meaning than the English word we use to translate it. What is our Nephesh? What is our soul? And how do we “love the Lord our God” with it?

The Greatest Commandment: Part One – The Heart

08/01/2021 – The Greatest Commandment: Part One – The Heart.

Mark 12:28-34. When Jesus was asked, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” In response, he quoted a famous Jewish prayer called the Shema. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” In this week’s message, we begin where all things begin. The Heart.

Homecoming: Return to Athens – Part Three

07/25/2021 – Homecoming: Return to Athens – Part Three

As we prepare for our full return to indoor worship in August, we are using the month of July as a time to reflect on where we have been, and where we are headed. This week we discuss some upcoming liturgical changes as well as some new “tools” we hope to add to your toolbox.

Homecoming: Return to Athens – Part Two

07/18/2021 – Homecoming: Return to Athens – Part Two

1 Corinthians 12; Hebrews 10:23-25; Matthew 6:19-24; Mark 10:21. As we prepare for our full return to indoor worship in August, we are using the month of July as a time to reflect on where we have been, and where we are headed. Last Sunday, we used the Law/Prophet/Wisdom lens to look at Kingdom and Discipleship. This week, we use the same lens to discuss Community and Generosity.

Homecoming: Return to Athens – Part One

07/11/2021 – Homecoming: Return to Athens – Part One

As we prepare for our full return to indoor worship in August, we are using the month of July as a time to reflect on where we have been, and where we are headed. If the natural stages of growth in faith are illustrated by the arrangement of the Hebrew scriptures (Law/Torah → Prophet/Critical-Thinking → Wisdom), we have been stuck far-too-long in the middle phase. It is time to move into Wisdom-Faith.

My Least Favorite Verses – Part Seven – Do Not Love the World

06/20/2021 – My Least Favorite Verses – Part Seven – Do Not Love the World

1 John 2:15-17. “Do not love the world.” That is a tall order, especially when we are so immersed in it. How are we to rightly receive this scripture? If left unchecked, what kind of people will the world form us into? How can we ensure we will be more shaped (counter-shaped) by Jesus’ vision for the world? My Least Favorite Verses – Part Six – When You Pray

06/13/2021 – My Least Favorite Verses – Part Six – When You Pray

Matthew 6:1-6. Many of us have a troubled-relationship with spiritual disciplines and practices we learned early in our faith journey, and those practices often become casualties of our “maturing faith.” In Jesus’ most well-known sermon — the sermon on the mount — he makes some uncomfortable assumptions about these practices in our lives … assumptions we need to hear.
