Lent – Week Four: Sin Layers

Multiplied - Lyrics

Multiplied

Your love is like radiant diamonds
Bursting inside us we cannot contain
Your love will surely come find us
Like blazing wild fires singing Your name

God of mercy sweet love of mine
I have surrendered to Your design
May this offering stretch across the skies
And these Halleluiahs be multiplied

Your love is like radiant diamonds
Bursting inside us we cannot contain
Your love will surely come find us
Like blazing wild fires singing Your name

God of mercy sweet love of mine
I have surrendered to Your design
May this offering stretch across the skies
And these Halleluiahs be multiplied

God of mercy sweet love of mine
I have surrendered to Your design
May this offering stretch across the skies
And these Halleluiahs be multiplied
And these Halleluiahs be multiplied

Great Things - Lyrics

Great Things

Come let us worship our King
Come let us bow at His feet
He has done great things

See what our Savior has done
See how His love overcomes
He has done great things
He has done great things

Oh, hero of Heaven
You conquer the grave
You free every captive
and break every chain oh God
You have done great things

We dance in Your freedom
awakened to life
Oh Jesus, our Savior
Your name lifted high oh God
You have done great things

You’ve been faithful through every storm
You’ll be faithful forevermore
You have done great things

And I know You will do it again
For Your promise is “Yes and amen”
You will do great things
God, You do great things

Oh, hero of Heaven
You conquer the grave
You free every captive
and break every chain oh God
You have done great things

We dance in Your freedom
awakened to life
Oh Jesus, our Savior
Your name lifted high oh God
You have done great things

Hallelujah God – above it all
Hallelujah God – unshakable
Hallelujah – You have done great things

Hallelujah God – above it all
Hallelujah God – unshakable
Hallelujah – You have done great things
You have done great things

Oh, hero of Heaven
You conquer the grave
You free every captive
and break every chain oh God
You have done great things

We dance in Your freedom
awakened to life
Oh Jesus, our Savior
Your name lifted high oh God
You have done great things

You have done great things
God, You have done great things

How Great Thou Art - Lyrics

How Great Thou Art

O Lord my God when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout
the universe displayed

Then sings my soul
my Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art
How great Thou art
(repeat)

And when I think of God His Son not sparing
Sent Him to die I scarce can take it in
That on the Cross
my burden gladly bearing
He bled and died to take away my sin

Then sings my soul
my Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art
How great Thou art
(repeat)

When Christ shall come
with shout of acclamation
And lead me home
what joy shall fill my heart
Then I shall bow with humble adoration
And then proclaim
“My God, how great Thou art!”

Then sings my soul
my Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art
How great Thou art
(repeat)

How great Thou art
How great Thou art

Old Testament Readings

Joshua 5:9-12

9 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So the place has been called Gilgal to this day.

10 On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated the Passover. 11 The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land: unleavened bread and roasted grain. 12 The manna stopped the day after they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan.

Psalm 32

1 Blessed is the one
    whose transgressions are forgiven,
    whose sins are covered.
2 Blessed is the one
whose sin the Lord does not count against them
and in whose spirit is no deceit.

3 When I kept silent,
    my bones wasted away
through my groaning all day long.
4 For day and night
    your hand was heavy on me;
my strength was sapped
as in the heat of summer.

5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you
and did not cover up my iniquity.
I said, “I will confess
    my transgressions to the Lord.”
And you forgave
    the guilt of my sin.

6 Therefore let all the faithful pray to you
    while you may be found;
surely the rising of the mighty waters
    will not reach them.
7 You are my hiding place;
you will protect me from trouble
and surround me with songs of deliverance.

8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.
9 Do not be like the horse or the mule,
    which have no understanding
but must be controlled by bit and bridle
or they will not come to you.
10 Many are the woes of the wicked,
    but the Lord’s unfailing love
surrounds the one who trusts in him.

11 Rejoice in the Lord and be glad, you righteous;
sing, all you who are upright in heart!

Great Are You Lord - Lyrics

Great Are You Lord

You give life, You are love
You bring light to the darkness
You give hope, You restore
Every heart that is broken
Great are You, Lord

It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praise
It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise to You only

You give life, You are love
You bring light to the darkness
You give hope, You restore
Every heart that is broken
Great are You, Lord

It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praise
It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise to You only

It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praise
It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise to You only

All the earth will shout Your praise
Our hearts will cry, these bones will sing
“Great are You, Lord”

All the earth will shout Your praise
Our hearts will cry, these bones will sing
“Great are You, Lord”

All the earth will shout Your praise
Our hearts will cry, these bones will sing
“Great are You, Lord”

It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praise
It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise to You only

It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praise
It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise to You only

New Testament Readings

2 Corinthians 5:16-21

16 So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Luke 15:1-3, 11-32

Tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

Then Jesus told them this parable

“There was a man who had two sons. 12 The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them.

13 “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. 14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

17 “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ 20 So he got up and went to his father.

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

21 “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.

25 “Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. 27 ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’

28 “The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29 But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’

31 “‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”

Leader: The word of the Lord.
Everyone: Thanks be to God.

Lent - Week Four: Sin Layers
“this is the most divinely tender and the most humanly touching story ever told on earth. This is no exaggeration.” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr (1956)

“Suppose a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey his father or mother, even though they discipline him. In such a case, the father and mother must take the son to the elders as they hold court at the town gate. The parents must say to the elders, ‘This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious and refuses to obey. He is a glutton and a drunkard.’ Then all the men of his town must stone him to death. In this way, you will purge this evil from among you, and all Israel will hear about it and be afraid.” – Deuteronomy 21:18-21

“humanity cannot do better than their very best at any given moment to communicate about God as they understand God, and Scripture faithfully reveals the evolution of our ancestors’ best attempts to communicate their successive best understandings of God.” – Brian McLaren

“They began to make merry” (Luke 15:23). Merry, of all things. They turn on the stereo. They break out the best Scotch. They roll back the living room carpet and ring up the neighbors.” – Frederick Buechner (Telling the Truth – p.68)

“He possessed a sort of unattractive goodness that was deeply repulsive.” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr

“The fatted calf, the best Scotch, the hoedown could all have been his, too, any time he asked for them except that he never thought to ask for them because he was too busy trying cheerlessly and religiously to earn them.” – Frederick Buechner (Telling the Truth – p. 69)

“Tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you!” – Jesus

“It will pass. Keep practicing.” – quote from modern parable

Sinking Deep - Lyrics

Sinking Deep

Standing here in Your presence
In a grace so relentless
I am won – by perfect love
Wrapped within the arms of heaven
In a peace that lasts forever
Sinking deep – in mercy’s sea

I’m wide awake
Drawing close – stirred by grace
And all my heart is Yours
All fear removed – I breathe You in
I lean into Your love
Oh, Your love

When I’m lost You pursue me
Lift my head to see Your glory
Lord of all – So beautiful
Here in You I find shelter
Captivated by the splendor
Of Your face – My secret place

I’m wide awake
Drawing close – stirred by grace
And all my heart is Yours
All fear removed – I breathe You in
I lean into Your love
Oh, Your love

Your love so deep
Is washing over me
Your face is all I seek
You are my everything

Jesus Christ
You are my one desire
Lord hear my only cry
To know You all my life

Love so deep
Is washing over me
Your face is all I seek
You are my everything

Jesus Christ
You are my one desire
Lord hear my only cry
To know You all my life

I’m wide awake
Drawing close – stirred by grace
And all my heart is Yours
All fear removed – I breathe You in
I lean into Your love
Oh, Your love
