Zephaniah 3:14-20; Isaiah 12:2-6; Philippians 4:4-7; Luke 3:7-18. In ancient Judaism, only non-Jewish converts into Judaism were baptized, for the Jewish people already had their own collective baptism story when Joshua led Israel through the Jordan River and they entered the promised land. Which begs the question, why was John “rebaptizing” fellow Jews in the Jordan River? What had they missed with their first baptism?
