The Folly and Great Wisdom of Sheep

05/08/2022 – The Folly and Wisdom of Sheep

Acts 9:36-43; Psalm 23; Revelation 7:9-17; John 10:22-30. Scripture uses a lot of Shepherding imagery to describe our relationship to God, but also to call out our tendency to act like sheep. To act foolishly and against our best interest. But, for all a sheep’s faults, there is one very wise behavior that sheep intuitively do far better than humans. Today, we explore the well-known Shepherd’s Psalm.

The “God-card”, Tears of Joy, and not-so Doubting Thomas

04/24/2022 – The “God-card”, Tears of Joy, and not-so Doubting Thomas

Acts 5:27-32; Psalm 150; Revelation 1:4-8; John 20:19-31. Using all four of this week’s lectionary texts, we touch on three questions. When is it right and when is it wrong to play the “God-card”? Why is everyone crying at Jesus’ second coming? And do we need to find a new name for Doubting Thomas?

He is Risen! He is Risen Indeed!

04/17/2022 – He is Risen! He is Risen Indeed!

AHe is Risen. He is Risen indeed! Sometimes places tell stories. The geography of Jesus’ journey on Holy Week can teach us a lot about God’s Kingdom and about the significance of Mary Magdalene’s presence at the tomb. What does this powerful day teach us about darkness and light, loss and hope, death and resurrection?

Lent Week Six – A Donkey and a Warhorse

04/10/2022 – Lent Week Six – A Donkey and a Warhorse

It’s passover week. Jerusalem is crowded. It’s the time of year when Rome sends a military procession into Jerusalem as a reminder of who’s in charge. Against this backdrop and in sharp contrast, Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey. What can we learn from this story that might change our lives today?

Lent Week Five – With Perfume and Her Hair

04/03/2022 – Lent Week Five – With Perfume and Her Hair

Isaiah 43:16-21; Psalm 126; Philippians 3:4b-14; John 12:1-8. In John chapter 12 Mary wipes jesus’s feet with perfume and her hair. This is a peculiar story, but it can teach us a great deal about intimacy and relationship with jesus. Especially in a world where relationships and intimacy are harder and harder to come by.

03/20/2022 – Lent Week Three – Temples, Towers and Fig Trees

Isaiah 55:1-9; Psalm 63:1-8; 1 Corinthians 10:1-13; Luke 13:1-9. What does Pontius Pilate attacking Galileans in the temple and the collapsing of a tower have to do with a fig tree? And with faith in the modern world?

Lent Week Two – Living Within and Against Barrenness

Genesis 15:1-12, 17-18; Psalm 27; Philippians 3:17-4:1; Luke 13:31-35. God promised Abram (Abraham) he would become a great nation, but in his old age, he and Sarai (Sarah) were still without an heir. What can this story teach us about hope and trust when all available evidence is to the contrary?

Epiphany Week Eight – Pets, Diapers and Bathroom Mirrors

02/27/2022 – Epiphany Week Eight – Pets, Diapers and Bathroom Mirrors

Exodus 34:29-35; Psalm 99; 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2; Luke 9:28-37. Today is Transfiguration Sunday. It was easy for Peter, James and John to encounter Jesus on the mountain-top when His appearance changed. But how do we recognize Him down from the mountain in the plains and valleys of everyday life?
